November is ‘National Entrepreneurship’ month in the US. đ At Canopy Group, many of our clients are entrepreneurs. We asked ourselves, “What does it take to be an entrepreneur?”. Entrepreneurship takes more than just talent. It’s also about having the courage to seize an opportunity when it comes your way; to be resilient, especially in the face of setbacks; and to have incredible determination and willpower to bring a vision to life.
Throughout this month, we will shine the spotlight on some of our clients and ask them for their entrepreneurial wisdom. Be inspired! This week, it’s Megan Thudium, Founder & CEO of MTC | The Content Agency.
Canopy Group: What inspired you to set up your own business?
Megan:Â Iâve always been really entrepreneurial. As a child, I would try to sell my Beanie Babies to neighbors or Girl Scout cookies. Iâve always had that entrepreneurial spirit. When I moved to Berlin, I didnât intend to start my own business, but after a while, I saw these global companies based in Berlin needed someone with a North American perspective. My business started from that idea and that need. I opened up my own business freelancing, and weâve grown from just me to 10 people now in nearly 3 years at MTC, and weâve evolved along the way.
Canopy Group: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an entrepreneur?
Megan:Â In an entrepreneurâs journey, there are multiple challenges. In the beginning, I started with no clients so my challenges were âhow do I feed myself?â and âhow do I sell myself and at what price point?â. Now that I have all this figured out, Iâm facing my next challenge, which ais âhow do I scale?â, âhow do I find the right support?â, and âhow do we stay rooted to our purpose as we grow?â
Canopy Group: No one succeeds alone – who has supported or inspired you in your journey?
Megan:Â Iâve been supported by many wonderful people. My mother is my business advisor, and sheâs also a business owner. She supported me both with plenty of advice as well as financially in the beginning. The other person who supported me is my partner, who also supported me financially. Those two people are my big support system.
Canopy Group: Why do you believe every entrepreneur should have a personal assistant?
Megan: This is a good question to ask where I am in my business and trying to decide what I can outsource because I canât do everything myself anymore. Weâve scaled and weâve grown to the point where I need to focus my energy on the core and outsource the things that take up headspace and keep me from focusing on the core aspect of my business. Itâs a good thing for an entrepreneur to know is to come to a crossroad and decide: do I keep doing everything myself and stay stagnant? Or do I find someone like a personal assistant who take burdens off you so you can grow and focus on the things youâre passionate about. Running a business is a lot of work, so if youâre not passionate about what youâre doing, why are you doing it?
