Personal assistants (PAs) have become an indispensable asset for busy professionals and entrepreneurs. While artificial intelligence (AI) has made huge strides in recent years, there are certain aspects where a human touch is needed… and certainly desired. So why should your personal assistant be human, not AI?

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
One of the most crucial aspects of a personal assistant’s role is the ability to understand and empathise with their client’s needs and emotions. It’s not called a personal assistant for nothing. PAs gauge subtle cues, such as tone of voice (yes, even over Slack or Teams) to discern their client’s mood and respond accordingly. AI does not. The emotional exchanges between client and assistant build trust, comfort, and personalised support that simply cannot be replicated by AI. In a world where individuals (despite being more connected than ever) feel increasingly alone, a PA is a valuable human touch-point in the day of a business professional.

Adaptability and Intuition
Experienced PAs possess remarkable adaptability and intuition, enabling them to navigate complex situations and respond with appropriate actions. They can quickly assess unpredictable circumstances, make split-second decisions, and adjust their strategies accordingly. Flexibility and their intuitive problem-solving capability allow them to handle unforeseen challenges effectively, providing a level of adaptability that AI struggles to match.

Importantly, because they already know their clients (including their priorities, preferences, etc.) they are able to action items without direct input from their clients or anyone else – especially important when their clients are on holiday and want to come back to order, not chaos. They see something that can be improved or handled in a different way and they action it.

Contextual Understanding and Nuanced Communication
In any personal or professional setting, effective communication is vital for seamless interaction. Human assistants excel in their ability to comprehend and convey complex ideas, considering the nuances of language, culture, and context. They possess the innate capacity to interpret and respond to ambiguous instructions, anticipating their client’s needs based on an understanding that goes beyond the literal interpretation that AI needs to succeed. This nuanced communication is often critical for successful collaboration, negotiation, and relationship building, areas where AI still falls short.

Creativity and Critical Thinking
Creativity and critical thinking are quintessentially human attributes that contribute significantly to problem-solving and innovation. PAs are often entrusted with tasks that require a level of creativity, such as event planning, brainstorming ideas, or finding unique solutions to challenges. A human can bring fresh perspectives, generate innovative ideas, and adapt their thinking based on their employer’s preferences and known history. A good assistant has the ability to subtly find out an employee’s favourite type of cake, so their manager can surprise them with a cake they genuinely love on their birthday. AI does not.

The mere fact that a client talks to their assistant about their lives, gives experienced assistants information that can later resurface when it’s appropriate… nobody talks about their lives, problems, or aspirations with ChatGPT. An example of this would be organising a big IPO party with an ‘ice’ theme, because in the early days of the business, the founder had initially denied a business loan by someone who had said that ‘hell would freeze over’ before their business ever succeeded. A founder might have shared this exchange with a PA or EA: a defining moment of perseverance for the founder, and a pivotal moment for the business. But this type of information would never be provided to AI. In the hands of AI, the opportunity for a truly gratifying and unforgettable moment in a founder’s life would be missed.

Trust, Confidentiality, and a Personalised Approach
Trust is the cornerstone of any personal assistant-employer relationship. While AI systems can offer data security, humans are better positioned to establish trust through their interpersonal skills, reliability, and confidentiality. Discretion and the ability to handle sensitive information with utmost care are indispensable qualities that humans naturally possess. This trust is built over time through shared experiences, open communication, and a sense of mutual understanding that AI alone cannot replicate. Crucially, the trust aspect of a PA goes beyond the realm of the workplace. It is not unusual for an assistant to be asked for advice regarding their client’s personal life based on the (sometimes quite personal) information given to them over months and years of working together. Giving person- and context-specific advice is just one of a PA’s added values.

A Human Touch
While AI has undoubtedly revolutionised various aspects of our lives, there are distinct advantages to having a human PA, even one who is remote. By capitalising on the inherent strengths of human capabilities, individuals will benefit from a PA who not only efficiently manages tasks but also offers genuine support, personalised attention, and the human touch that is essential in our complex, sometimes lonely, and ever-evolving world.
